Amnesia is undoubtedly the series that ignited my love of the horror game genre, and like many, I first experienced the game through Let's Plays by a then-little-known YouTuber called PewDiePie. RE6 has worse game design and feels more clunky control wise and has some bad design elements, but is similar to RE5.ĭead Rising 2 Off the Record is pretty fun coop-wise, but is more comical than horror, even though it has a zombie setting. Resident Evil 5 is a great coop game and decently challenging, I can definitely recommend it and it's pretty fun, and I'm not even really a fan of the series either.

I don't remember enough of FEAR 2 and I played 3 just for the coop. Its completely divergent, except for right at the end. You shoot soldiers, then listen to people's voicemail for ten minutes while the lights flicker. Its a great design idea.įEAR 1 isn't really a strong horror 'game' because no horror elements exist at the same time as action. That being said, the game devs were REALLY smart by making all the UI elements immersive to the setting of the game.

I've noticed in both games that QTE events purposefully obscure the button you need to press to win them just so they can show you a gross death scene. Dead Space 2 is much better optimized, but not really better story-wise, and they try to up the gross factor. Its just a jumpscare + gross visual game. This isn't really fun, IMO, because it makes it feel like the game isn't giving me the benefit of control in favor of throwing in predictable horror elements. Another instance that bothered me is where you can also prepare for a re-animator monster's obvious appearance by turning a bunch of bodies into chunky bits but on the return visit when the re-animator predictably appears they will all be conveniently put back together again. It just pops into existence and immediately lunges, and you can notice this is you start circle strafing with the camera turned. It doesn't crawl out of a vent, drop from the ceiling, etc. The most notable example is when you enter a very large open room, and the game spawns a monster behind you to attack. It will also do very game-design unfair things merely for the sake of horror.

I wouldn't recommend Dead Space 1, because it isn't optimized for PC controls at all thus making it really clunky. Forced camera angles that hide a monster the player should be able to see, for example. It shouldn't be un-fun because someone used bad game design in an attempt to force fear via horror stereotypes. A horror genre game should be fun to play and can be scary because of its setting. I'm extremely picky when it comes to horror games, because I don't think the genre should excuse poor game design.
